NCTI Fiber-Optic Pathway

Course Summary

The NCTI Fiber-Optic Pathway is a role-based, stackable certification programme that takes a learner from fibre fundamentals all the way to Master Fiber-Optic Technician. It combines self-paced online learning with a hands-on, instructor-led workshop delivered locally by RWDC — so the credential reflects what the technician can actually do in the field. Certifications are industry-recognised and shareable (e.g. on LinkedIn).

Who it's for

Technicians and career-changers who want an internationally recognised fibre-optic credential, and employers upskilling crews for real field work — installation, maintenance, and outside-plant construction. Learners can follow the full pathway to the Master capstone or take the role-specific track that matches their job.

Format & delivery

  • Online, self-paced on NCTI’s Amp learning platform — 360° video, 3D imagery, interactive activities, and assessments.
  • Mobile app (Android & iOS) with many lessons available offline, so learning continues without internet access.
  • Instructor-led hands-on workshop delivered locally by RWDC (see below).
  • One year of access to course content.

Certifications earned (4 stackable credentials)

The pathway is built as one required core that branches into role-specific tracks, each ending in its own certification:

  1. Fiber-Optic Installer
  2. Fiber-Optic Maintenance Technician
  3. Fiber-Optic Construction Technician
  4. Master Fiber-Optic Technician (capstone)

Each also carries a shareable virtual badge (Foundational Fiber-Optics, Installer, Maintenance Tech, Construction Tech).

Programme structure

  • Splicing, termination & cable infrastructure
  • Network architecture & PON theory (topologies, GPON / XGS-PON)
  • OSP design & engineering (route maps, link-loss budgets, joint-use)
  • Field & ladder safety (PPE, pole climbing, electrical hazards)
  • Residential / premises installation (“last mile,” ONT, in-home wiring)
  • Outside-plant construction (aerial & underground methods)
  • Maintenance & troubleshooting (six-step process)
  • Activation & acceptance testing (OTDR certification testing)
  • Disaster recovery & restoration planning

Hands-on workshop — Fiber-Optic Technologies Workshop (1.5 days)

An instructor-led, hands-on workshop delivered locally by RWDC. Participants review applicable OSHA, ANSI, and TIA safety requirements, then build a foundation in fibre network architecture, components, PON technologies, construction practices, testing methods, and preventive maintenance. Using industry-standard equipment, learners practise verifying network performance, identifying faults, performing fusion splicing, and completing high-quality fibre installations and repairs in the field.
